Entrepreneurship
Do you ever have thought about entrepreneurship? It is a very popular word around teenagers now that to use their own ability and knowledge to create their own business. According to the school’s official website, fortunately, the head master of Cheshire Academy, John D. Nozell is going to invite one of the creators of Ben&Jerry’s Ice Cream, Jeff Furman, who graduated from Cheshire Academy in 1961 to give a speech on the Commencement Address at this year’s ceremony on May 30. (Cheshireacademy.org)
According to Cheshire Academy’s website, the varsity basketball team that Jeff was on in his senior year won the Connecticut State Championship. The wining could prove his ambition in his future career. After received the business and law degree from New York University, he changed his dream of being a chemical engineer. In stead, he worked together with his friend Ben Cohen and became a bus driver. (Cheshireacademy.org) Since Jeff had a great knowledge after studying at the law school in New York University, he easily wrote the business plan for the Ben&Jerry’s ice cream shop. The ice cream shop was opened in May 5, 1978 in Builington, Vermont.(Wikipedia.org)
Not everyone who got good grades in school is able to succeed in their business. Jeff is a great example since he was not good at reading books in the classroom. He said that” The reality was, I began to realize that the traditional methods of learning weren’t for me. I’m an experiential learner. I get my education from doing things, being immersed in them and trying to figure them out. That’s part of how we started Ben & Jerry’s, by asking, “How do we fully integrate a social mission into everything we do?” (Cheshireacademy.org) His words showed us the impotence of social practice.
Besides social practice, the purpose of why would you want to create your own business is also crucial whether you can succeed or not. According to Ben&Jerry’s official website: “The mission of the Ben & Jerry's Foundation is to engage Ben & Jerry's employees in philanthropy and social change work; to give back to our Vermont communities; and to support grassroots activism and community organizing for social and environmental justice around the country.” (Benandjerrysfoundation.org) Their purpose is not only to make money for their own benefit, but for the environment justice around the country. Only have a selfish purpose is not going to lead you the success, so a big dream that is going to benefit a large group of people is always important to you.
All in all, to have a dream go working on is always important to now a day’ s teenagers, and that’s the main reason why the Head of School Jhon D. Nozell invited Jeff to the Commencement. He explained: “Jeff’s dedication to corporate social responsibility is part of why I wanted to reach out to him and ask him to come back and speak at Commencement.” (Cheshireacademy.org) “I have always valued the notion that doing well and doing good are not mutually exclusive.” He added.
