· Comma VS. Semicolon in a compound sentence

· Comma:The comma ( , ) is a punctuation mark used to indicate a separation of ideas or of elements within a sentence.
"Water, taken in moderation, cannot hurt anybody."
"Marriage is a great institution, but I'm not ready for an institution yet."
"Early to rise and early to bed makes a man healthy, wealthy, and dead."

· SemicolonThe semicolon or semi-colon ( ; ) is a punctuation mark that separates major sentence elements. PS: A semicolon can uses before therefore, however, otherwise, moreover, etc.
"Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things."
"We lavish on animals the love we are afraid to show to people. They might not return it; or worse, they might."

· Compound sentenceA compound sentence consists of two or more independent clauses.
1.    Independence clause, (FANBOYS: For-reason, And-addition, Nor-and not, But-contrast, Or-option, Yet-unexpected outcome, So-result) Independence clause.
2.    Independence clause; Independence clause.

· A compound sentence is consisted by 2 independent clauses, but you cannot put 2 independents clause together by adding only a comma or a FANBOYS. However, you can either add both of them or just add a semicolon between the two independent clauses.  

· Ex: Mary walked to the party, but she was unable to walk home.
   Mary walked to the party; she was unable to walk home.
   Mary walked to the party but was unable to walk home.

·Practice:

Join the coordinate clauses
1.* Using FANBOYS
1)   He couldn’t do it. He couldn’t find any one to do it for him.
2)   Hurry up. We will miss the train.
3)   Fans love to watch Anna. She dances beautifully.
4)   She is a graceful dancer. People enjoy watching her.
5)   She hasn’t taken dance lessons. She doesn’t need to.
6)   Her technique is unconventional. Her lines are extraordinary.
7)   Other dancers try to imitate her style. They have not succeeded.

2.    * Using Semicolon
1)   She doesn’t like the film. She is disgusted with it.
2)   People should not smoke. Smoking is harmful to their health.
*Notice that the two sentences have a really close relationship and meaning, so they can connect with a semicolon.
  3) He promised to come to the meeting. However, he didn’t appear.
  4) She didn’t go with them to climb the mountain. Otherwise, she would have been caught in the storm.
